Any Unicode-compliant serif font may be used in manuscripts submitted to the Journal of the IPA, as long as that font is used throughout. Neither Doulos SIL nor DejaVu Sans is required. IPA Kiel should not be used, as it is a legacy non-Unicode-compliant font.

The best Windows fonts for general use appear to be Times New Roman, Arial, Courier New, and Segoe UI. The versions supplied with Windows 7 and 8 include all the symbols on the IPA Chart. Other useful fonts are available for free download from www.sil.org.

The fonts can be installed by placing all the files in the sty and mf directories in the appropriate places. The actual installation procedure depends on the OS. For details, refer to the Introduction of the documentation.

The Unicode Phonetic Keyboard, developed by Mark Huckvale at UCL, is a freely available installable keyboard for Windows PCs that provides a convenient keyboard layout for the word-processing of phonetic transcription using Unicode fonts. The installation package comes complete with two Unicode fonts: Doulos and Charis that have been developed by SIL.

Doulos SIL is a Unicode-based font family that supports the wide range of languages that use the Latin and Cyrillic scripts, whether used for phonetic or orthographic needs. Linguists appreciate the wide range of characters and symbols useful in their work.

This Doulos SIL font is essentially the same design as the SIL Doulos font first released by SIL in 1992. The design has been changed from the original in that it has been scaled down to be a better match with contemporary digital fonts, such as Times New Roman. Read more about its design.

Doulos SIL is a Unicode-encoded serif font similar to Times New Roman. Besides having a comprehensive inventory of glyphs needed for almost any Roman- or Cyrillic-based writing system, it also contains the entire inventory of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The font supports advanced OpenType features useful for multilingual texts, including careful diacritic positioning and small caps. Read more about our font features.

Please note that the Doulos SIL, Charis SIL and Gentium Plus fonts provide Unicode IPA support. However, you must convert existing data using the "SIL IPA93 Fonts" to Unicode before using the Doulos SIL, Charis SIL or Gentium Plus fonts (see SIL IPA93 Data Conversion).

The SIL Encore IPA and SIL IPA93 fonts are obsolete, symbol-encoded fonts. Their use is discouraged. If you decide to download and use these fonts, please note there is no user support for these fonts.

The following is information about the SIL Encore IPA and SIL Encore IPA93 Fonts. The SIL Encore IPA fonts are provided in TrueType and Type 1 formats. The SIL Encore IPA93 Fonts are provided in TrueType format only. Please read the documentation that is included with the fonts for more specific information.

We are happy to make these IPA fonts available to the general linguistic community at no charge. More SIL fonts, containing a much richer phonetic character set (1600+ characters), can be obtained by contacting SIL.

Even though these fonts are "free", SIL retains all copyright and ownership of the included fonts and reserves the right to restrict their use and distribution at any time. They may not be used as a basis for other fonts. They may be placed on bulletin boards, etc. but cannot be included in (or bundled with) any commercial product including hard disks or CD-ROMs without specific written permission.

Since this is a custom-encoded font, you may be able to enter the characters directly from the keyboard without using a keyboard (i.e., for Windows you can use the Alt key plus the access code listed in the ipa93.pdf and/or IpaChars.pdf files). Keep in mind the following:

Hi Paul,You'll need to download and install one of the above keyboards (try the IPA Unicode 6.2 Macintosh Keyboard v1.5) to type IPA text. Downloading the keyboard is fairly intuitive, but installing it on a Mac is a little more complex. We've provided instructions at If you continue to have trouble with the actual text input process once the keyboard has been downloaded and installed, please send an email to and I'll be happy to help you further.

Hello, I've downloaded the "keyboard layout" and installed it properly. However, if I try to use it, for example, in a word processor, I don't get anything different than if I'm just using a standard American English font.

When you downloaded the keyboard, a PDF file should have been included in the package (if you can't find this, send me an email at and I'll send it to you). This PDF contains details of which keystrokes will display which IPA characters.

If you continue to have trouble once you have the font and the PDF, send me an email and I will help you check that the keyboard has been properly installed and that you have everything you need to get going.

I just downloaded the keyboard viewer and installed it, but was still having trouble finding the correct keystrokes until I read the pdf that accompanies the keyboard download. That has a really useful set of charts showing the location of the symbols and the vital information about the 'dead' keys. In other phonetic fonts I've used, these have usually been the option key, shift key or a combination of these. In this font, however, the dead keys are the = key, the key. The fact that the latter two have to be accessed using the shift key makes it even more un-instinctive!

I downloaded the keyboard layout and font that goes with it, and set it up according to the instructions, but what I type still comes out in normal English rather than the IPA alphabet I wanted to use. Help?

Can someone help me access the IPA keyboard on my new MacBook Pro. I'm able to get the "IPA Unicode 6.2(V1.5) MAC, but it doesn't show IPA characters. I included it in my Library Keyboard Layouts and I have CharisSIL fonts installed.

Whenever you search in PBworks, Dokkio Sidebar (from the makers of PBworks) will run the same search in your Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Gmail, and Slack. Now you can find what you're looking for wherever it lives. Try Dokkio Sidebar for free.

You won't be able to use IPA on your Mac until you have an IPA font installed, and Mac doesn't install one by default. It is true that some Mac fonts have some IPA characters, but they lack a complete set. Just go to Cool free IPA fonts to download and get a real IPA font. If you need help installing it, go to How to install fonts on your computer.

Most Windows 2000 machines are preconfigured to view Unicode IPA characters. Windows 2000 comes with the Lucida Sans Unicode font, which contains the Unicode IPA characters. A full Unicode font, Arial Unicode MS, is freely downloadable from Microsoft. Arial Unicode MS includes not only the IPA characters, but about 65,000 other Unicode characters. 2ff7e9595c
